Just to recap: In episode 17, we talked about the four major disciplines that arcanists study. We talked about how each of these disciplines fits into a really neat spectrum based on whether they rely on the Sleeping Mind or the Waking Mind. The Waking Mind represents the consciousness that we use to interact with the world. Our thoughts, observations, and intellect. The Sleeping Mind represents, in a way, our subconscious and instincts. It is, as Elodin says, “wide and wild enough to hold the names of things.”
We’ve also speculated that the reason that Kvothe had trouble coming up with a name for his arrowcatch is that Naming and Artificing are on opposite ends of the Sleeping/Waking Mind spectrum. While caught up in the intensely intellectual process of building his device, his sleeping mind had no room to work. All of this led to…omg…I’m so excited…an infographic:
